The difference in one sentence
Generating creates an image from nothing (a text prompt, or another image used as a style reference). Upscaling takes an image that already exists — a raw generation or a real photo — and increases its resolution and level of detail, without changing its composition. These are two complementary operations, not competing ones: the second almost always comes after the first.
When to use which
- Generate — when you're starting from an idea or a concept to explore, with no source image.
- Upscale — when you already have the right visual (composition, subject and style locked in) but it lacks the resolution for a large-format use, or the fine detail isn't sharp enough.
