Why do my AI-generated images have deformed hands or unreadable text?

Two very recognizable flaws, and two different technical causes. Here's why they happen, and what actually fixes the problem instead of just regenerating on repeat.

The technical cause

An image generation model learns from statistical patterns, not from anatomical or linguistic understanding. A hand has a highly variable structure depending on angle and pose, with very little margin for error before the result looks wrong to the human eye — an extra finger or a misplaced joint stands out immediately. Text embedded in an image is a different problem: the model generates shapes that resemble letters without necessarily "writing" in the strict sense, which is why characters come out distorted or inconsistent.

The fixes that actually work

  • Frame to limit visibility — a tighter shot or hands partly out of frame reduces the risk without changing anything about the engine.
  • Specify the pose in the prompt — describe a simple position ("hands crossed", "one hand holding a cup") rather than letting the model improvise a complex pose.
  • Don't rely on generated text — for a logo, packaging, or any text that needs to stay readable, add it in a touch-up after generation rather than leaving it to the prompt.
  • Generate several variants — rather than a single generation, producing three or four and keeping the best one is usually faster than trying to fix a bad result.

For the complete method for structuring a prompt, see our guide how to write a good AI image prompt.

Frequently asked questions

To varying degrees, yes — it's a structural limitation of current image generation, not a flaw specific to one tool. The newest models are improving on this front, without having fully solved it.

Sometimes, but it isn't reliable on its own. Adjusting the framing to limit how visible hands are, or doing a targeted manual touch-up, gives a more predictable result than running generations at random.
